Né dans le Cheshire, Wayne McGregor a étudié la danse à
l'université de Bretton Hall puis à la Jose Limon School à New York. En 1992,
il fonde Random, compagnie dont les membres ont des formations et des
expériences très diverses, et est nommé chorégraphe en résidence au théâtre
'The Place', à Londres. Ce trublion de la scène chorégraphique anglaise, en
phase avec toutes les démarches exploratoires des arts numériques
(technologies, architecture, 3D, animation,... ) a très rapidement hissé la
Random Dance à la hauteur des compagnies les plus attendues.
Une
caractéristique des chorégraphies de McGregor est l'énergie et la fluidité
mêlées à l'utilisation de nombreux outils technologiques pour la mise en
scène. Il est depuis 2006, chorégraphe principal résident au Royal Ballet du
Covent Garden Opera House, honneur que seuls Frederick Ashton et Kenneth
MacMillan avaient eu.
Il crée des ballets,
mais aussi les parties chorégraphiques de films ou d’opéra. Il doit créer Genus
en octobre prochain pour l’Opéra de Paris ainsi que plusieurs ballets pour le
Royal Ballet cette saison.
